awu: echo, relay, chorus
AWU est un projet de radio de femmes basée au Sénégal, un espace de parole, de pensée et de savoir qui met en avant des voix de femmes sénégalaises, africaines et de la diaspora afin de construire, déconstruire ou reconstruire des narrations “par nous et pour nous”.
Le projet de la radio est pensée par un groupe de femmes qui va s’appuyer sur la polyphonie du travail collectif pour créer un espace d’écoute et d’expression, un espace d’étude et de partage de la pensée politique, un espace sûr qui permet de parler de sujets sensibles dans un anonymat relatif.
La radio abordera la pluralité des questions identitaires, de genre, de sexualité, de prévention, d’immigration avec une perspective féministe, queer, anti-coloniale et panafricaniste. En mettant des pratiques collectives d’activisme politique et social à la portée d’une audience diverse, la radio sera un outil de sensibilisation qui permettra d’engendrer un débat sur la pluralité.
La radio se fera archive sonore des mouvements féministes, féminins et queers et des questions politiques et sociales qui les traversent. AWU n’est pas la première radio portée par des femmes au Sénégal. Des radios telles que la radio Thiénaba et la radio Manooré sont des exemples importants qui servent d’inspiration pour AWU.
AWU se veut très focalisée sur le contexte Sénégalais mais s’élargira au niveau international à travers des collaborations qu’elle développera avec des structures, collectifs et individus au Sénégal et à l’étranger.
La première manifestation de AWU est un bibliothèque d’ouvrage de femmes qui peut être visitée dans les locaux du Ban workshop à Dakar dans le quartier de Mamelles. La liste des livres de la bibliothèque sera bientôt en ligne. Depuis le mois de février 2022 la bibliothèque a activé un service d’emprunte des livres de la collection.
AWU is a feminist radio station based in Senegal, a space for speech, thought, and knowledge that brings forth the voices of Senegalese, African, and Diaspora women in order to build, deconstruct, and reconstruct narratives “for us, by us.”
The radio is carried by a women’s collective that will draw on the polyphony of collective work to create a space for listening and expression, a space for researching and sharing political thought, a safe space that allows us to talk about sensitive subjects in relative anonymity.
The radio will address the plurality of issues related to identity, gender, sexuality, prevention, and immigration with a feminist, queer, anti-colonial, and pan-Africanist perspective. By bringing collective practices of political and social activism to a diverse audience, the radio will be a tool for raising awareness and generating a debate on plurality.
The radio will become a sound archive of feminist, women’s, and queer movements and the political and social issues that run through them. AWU is not the first women’s radio in Senegal. Radio stations such as Radio Thiénaba and Radio Manooré are important examples that serve as inspiration for us.
AWU wants to intentionally focus on the Senegalese context but will expand internationally through the collaborations it will develop with institutions, collectives, and individuals in Senegal and abroad.
The first manifestation of AWU is a women’s library which can be visited in the premises of the Ban workshop in Dakar in the district of Mamelles. The list of the books in the library will be online soon. Since February 2022, the library has activated a borrowing service for books from the collection.
